She loves working with clay, making a range of sculptures, small and large, trying different types of clay and glazes is always fun to see what comes out of the kiln.

Kat Hardwick spent her childhood in the idyllic French South Pacific, and her adolescence by the ocean in Sydney. She moved to Perth in her early twenties. Kat’s primary inspiration is the Australian landscape, particularly the coastline. She brings together abstract and representational elements to express this, whilst also exploring our role in shaping and interacting with the landscape.

She slip-casts in fine porcelain from her own moulds creating contemporary forms using a minimal palette of coloured slips that evoke a fluid aesthetic. Felicity enhances her work with decals using drawing and printmaking techniques that allude to textures from the natural and built environment.

13 Century Celedon Bowl

Basic Elements, located in Guildford, WA, specialises in antique, unique ethnographic items and artifacts. Maurice, the owner has kindly donated this Qingbai porcelain bowl featuring incised decoration. It is consistent with ceramic styles produced during the Song or Yuan dynasties (approximately 10th to 14th centuries). The bowl is characterised by a pale, bluish-white glaze and delicate floral or cloud-scroll motifs carved into the interior.

Stewart Scambler is one of WA’s most prolific and respected ceramic artists. He has a studio is in Palmyra and his wood fire kiln on a property at York. Environmental concerns drive much of Stewarts practice and he and his wife grow the wood used in the kiln from seedlings. The clay used is blended using local clays so that the work is very much of the place. He has generously been donating his amazing work to Empty Bowls for a number of years.
